Miura Systems brings first mobile Chip & PIN card readers to South Africa and announces major Visa-backed partnership for Europe

Thanks to major roll-outs from two of Miura Systems’ partners, Nedbank (South Africa) and payleven (Europe), more medium, small, and micro merchants across the world will be able to accept EMV (Europay, MasterCard & Visa) compliant Chip & PIN debit and credit card payments using smartphones.

The solutions that are being brought to market will significantly reduce the cost of taking credit card payments for smaller merchants. Unlike many other mobile point-of-sale (mPOS) card readers that rely on electronic signatures, Miura’s secure PIN hardware will allow these merchants to take payment from both Visa and MasterCard customers.

South Africa’s first mobile EMV-certified credit-card payments

Recently, Nedbank launched the Nedbank PocketPOS™, the first live EMV certified mobile point-of-sale (POS) solution in South Africa that enables businesses to process debit and credit card transactions by using a smartphone connected to a secure card reader.

PocketPOS™ is designed to operate where EMV ‘Chip & PIN’ technology has been mandated, and uses Miura’s certified secure card reader and advanced encryption to capture and protect the card and PIN data.

Miura’s Chip & PIN-based hardware is compliant for Visa, MasterCard and American Express®. This is the first time a solution has been offered to South Africa that is compliant with all three major credit cards’ security requirements.

Major Visa-backed roll-out across Europe

Miura System’s Shuttle Chip & PIN device is also set for a major roll-out across Europe after payleven, announced its launch of Miura’s Systems-powered, fully certified Chip & PIN technology, with the backing of Visa Europe. With customers across the European continent, payleven is the first Pan-European mobile payments company live with a fully certified Chip & PIN solution for iOS and Android. Whereas other mPOS players in the market focus on signature based authorization methods, payleven early on invested time and resources in bringing Chip & PIN to market.

The new technology is now available across the UK, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Poland. Additionally, payleven also offers its service in Brazil where Chip & PIN will be introduced at a later stage.
